Wood Planks is a block that is crafted by the player from wood. It appears as a series of interconnected planks. Wood planks have a variety of crafting and structural uses, and are a renewable resource. Wood is easy to obtain in any biome where trees can be found.

Contents

[edit] Occurrence

Oak wood planks can be found in Abandoned Mine Shafts where they form beams supported by wood fence posts. They also appear in NPC villages where they form various structures including walls, roofs, and floors of many buildings, and in some rooms of strongholds (mainly libraries). Spruce wood planks can be found in Swamp biomes forming Witch huts, the only place in the game where Witches can spawn.

[edit] Building

A shack made of wood planks.

The value of building with wood planks is disputed. Structures built of planks can be burned down easily, either by accident or by griefers. It is often used, regardless of the dangers, due to its abundance in trees and its aesthetically pleasing appearance. As of 12w17a, wood slabs burn.

[edit] Crafting

The saplings at the bottom grow into the wood at top, which craft into the planks between them.

When crafted from Wood, Wood Planks are colored according to the wood they came from, as seen on the right. Wood planks prior to 1.2.4 all had the same color regardless of the tree type the wood came from. Wood planks of different colors do not stack.

[edit] As a crafting ingredient

Wood planks (of any color) are used in many crafting recipes: wood axes, pickaxes, swords, shovels, and hoes; buttons, trapdoors, pressure plates, crafting tables, chests, bowls, signs, doors, boats, sticks, stairs, fence gates, jukeboxes, bookshelves, note blocks, beds, slabs, and pistons.

Stairs and slabs have a special feature: all planks used in one crafting must be of the same type, but the resulting items will keep the type name (and color) of the wood used; e.g., "Oak Wood Stairs", or "Jungle Wood Slabs". For all other items, planks of different types can be mixed freely, with no effect on the result.

[edit] Fuel

Planks can fuel a furnace, burning for 15 seconds apiece, smelting 1½ items. Thus a log's worth of planks smelts 6 items, making them the second most efficient wood-derived fuel (after charcoal, which smelts 8 items per log although you need to smelt wood with something else to gain charcoal). They are therefore the best fuel for creating your first charcoal when no coal is available. They are also more efficient for smelting 4 or fewer items, since each wood block produces 4 planks which can be used individually whereas the rest of the charcoal would be wasted.

[edit] History

Classic
Pre 0.0.9a (May 13, 2009) Wooden plank added. When first introduced into the game, wood planks looked like this: OldWood.PNG Visible are some somewhat brick-like markings, which still exist on the plank texture today but are hard to see.
In Survival Test, Wood Planks were obtained by destroying a Wood block, but this was later changed in Indev so that destroying a Wood block obtains the block, which can later be crafted into planks.
Beta
1.8 Wood Planks can be found in villages and mineshafts.
1.9pre5 The texture of Wood Planks changed.
Official release
1.2.4 Three new colors of Wood Planks were added corresponding to and crafted from the four types of Wood; previously, there was only the medium shade which is now obtained from oak wood.
1.3.1 12w25a Stairs and Slabs have been updated with new colors that correspond with the type of Wood Plank they're crafted with.
1.3.1 Wood Planks, Slabs, and Stairs are currently named corresponding to the type of wood they are crafted from (e.g. Wood Planks crafted from Birch Wood are called Birch Wood Planks).

[edit] Colored Wooden Planks

Dinnerbone briefly thought about implementing colored wooden planks, releasing a test image on his Twitter page. This however never got implemented, as can be seen from the following quotes. Colored Wooden planks.png

Taking a small break from launcherstuffs to doodle around with funstuffs. Would this be of use to anybody? http://dinnerbone.com/media/uploads/2013-04/screenshots/Minecraft_13w16b_2013-04-24_19-54-57.png
Sorry, I meant "wood this be of use". I totally missed that pun.
Arbitrary response guage: 30% "please no" 80% "yes please". Yes, that's 110%. I don't even know.
I'm just doodling around, I'm not sure that I can actually add it because it'd want stairs/etc too, but it's fun to investigate these things
Okay okay, no coloured wood. How about something completely different? http://dinnerbone.com/media/uploads/2013-04/screenshots/Minecraft_13w16b_2013-04-24_23-04-32.png

[edit] Trivia

  • Wood planks always face north/south.
  • Although new wood plank colors were added in 1.2.4, items crafted from them would all have the "default" color. The planks received from a broken boat would be the "default" color regardless of which type was used to craft the boat, this gives players a way to convert one type to the default color but at a loss; 5 planks convert to 3 planks and 2 sticks. However, if you have planks in a large amount, it may be a worthwhile tradeoff.
  • In Minecraft Pocket Edition Lite, it is possible to find a short corridor underground with a block of oak wood planks at the end. This happens most commonly in deserts, but is still a rare find.
