Location

The Sound Directory for Minecraft is located as follows:

  • Windows XP/Vista/7: %AppData%\.minecraft\resources
  • Linux: ~/.minecraft/resources
  • Mac OS X: ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/resources

Sub-Folders

There are 5 sub-folders in resources. They are music, newmusic, newsound, sound, and streaming. The music folder contains the older music, from Classic, and the newmusic folder contains all of the updated music. The newsound folder contains all of the sound from Infdev/Alpha, and the sound folder contains all of the sound from Classic.

The streaming folder contains the music run by the jukebox on Alpha. Besides playable Ogg Vorbis files, this folder also contains files with the extension .mus, which are Vorbis files that are encoded in a way so they cannot be played with any regular music player. However, currently two of 12 encoded tracks have decoded counterparts in this folder, which means that all other files could possibly be unlocked in future updates when more record types are available.
