Tutorials/Automatic farming
This page is about automated farming, if you are looking for farming pumpkins, see Pumpkin Farming. If you want to know how to farm melons, see Melon Farming. If you want to know more about wheat farming, see Wheat Farming. If you want to know more about mob farming, see mob farming.
Automatic farming is a way you can farm an item (Usually plants) so you can easily get the drops without doing any manual labor. Currently, this only works for Pumpkins, Melons, Sugar cane, and Cactus. There are ways you can farm Trees, but it is not fully automatic without BUD switches.

[edit] Wheat
Wheat farms can be automated in a number of ways, depending on personal preference and the abundance of bonemeal. The most common design for an automated wheat farm would be one utilizing pistons to control water currents, harvesting the wheat when ready.
With the use of bonemeal, wheat farming speeds can be greatly increased. The video below showcases one of these farms.
This concept was originally made by GenerikB, then improved by PearSquirrel to make it extremely compact and perform at a rate of 75 pieces of wheat per minute.
[edit] Pumpkin and Melons
Please note that this requires redstone, but in small quantities.
To make the Auto slicing Melon and Pumpkin farm, you need to first find a small, flat area to build in. Start by placing a water source with a bucket, and tilling the grass nearby it.
Then, block all but one sides with any block, where the stone bricks are in the image to the right. After that is done, place a sticky piston two blocks below the area you did not cover. Place any solid block where the grass block is shown, and connect it to a redstone torch, make sure it is facing the same direction as the picture is.
After that, place a redstone repeater facing away from the redstone torch and pointing towards where your melon/pumpkin will grow. Make a loop around the perimeter with redstone, and the occasional repeater may be necessary, depending how large you are making the structure. The note block seen in the bottom right of the image is optional, it just makes sound so you notice the plant being harvested.
After you finish, plant the melon or pumpkin seeds (If you already haven't), and wait for your first harvest.

If following the video however, you need a nice amount of redstone and redstone repeaters. For the roof/building Wooden Planks work very well, and are very easy to get.[edit] Cactus
Please note that this requires at least one block of sand and one block of cactus.
Also note that some of the cactus harvested may be lost due to the fact that cactus destroys blocks.
To make an auto cactus farm, start by placing a sand block that isn't nearby any structures or fences. Then, place a cactus block on the sand. If it doesn't plant, look at this page: cactus
Like the image to the right, place any block at least two blocks ABOVE the cactus you placed. You can add more cactus in a diagonal pattern. Now you have an automatic cutting cactus farm.

[edit] Sugar cane
Even though there are machines to make these items break, such as pistons and water, they are not fully automatic unless a redstone clock, BUD switch, or water sensor connected to a growing sugarcane is utilized. If you want to see an example of farming with sugar cane, go here.
An example of a fully automatic sugar cane harvester (only works on a single plant) utilizing a water sensor can be found here
