Survival Mode was introduced to create a game-mode that had health, mobs and personal and external inventories, as well as crafting.

Survival could refer to:

• Survival (Game Mode) - The game mode where players need to try to survive.
• Survival Test - the free test version of survival, with basic mobs, inventory, health and binary lighting. This version of the game is no longer under development and is obsolete.
• Indev - crafting and smelting are introduced, along with much smoother lighting. Obsolete and no longer under development.
• Infdev - infinite map test. introduced some more craftable elements, rare winter map generation and hugely improved mob-player interaction. Obsolete and no longer under development.
• Alpha - infinite maps with more mobs, more craftable materials. Obsolete and no longer under development.
• Survival Multiplayer - an early test of Beta in multiplayer that is being updated constantly.
• Beta - The latest version of Minecraft, replacing Alpha.
