Pumpkin Seeds will grow a central stem, that grows to max size before spawning a Pumpkin next to it.[1][2] The stem can be grown to full size with Bone Meal, and will spawn a Pumpkin shortly thereafter. Similar to Melon Seeds, Pumpkin Seeds can only be planted on hoed soil, however, vines will spawn pumpkins on both farmland and soil.
Seeds can be obtained by harvesting a fully grown stem or by placing a pumpkin in a crafting grid. For more farming information, see Pumpkin.

[edit] History
Pumpkin seeds were introduced in the Beta 1.8 Pre-release. The seeds were no longer found in Abandoned Mine Shaft chests in 1.8.1 due to a bug. However, this was fixed in Beta 1.9 Prerelease 4 (possibly earlier).
[edit] Trivia
There are 7 seeds displayed in the Pumpkin Seeds image, compared to the 9 displayed in the Melon Seeds image and the 7 displayed in the Wheat Seeds image.
As of the Minecraft 1.2 release, Pumpkins harvested from Pumpkin Seeds can be used to: get more seeds, wear as a helmet, craft a Jack-O-Lantern, make a Snow Golem, make an Iron Golem, or placed for decoration.
