Paper is an item crafted from Sugar Cane. Paper is used to make Maps, and Books which are used to craft Bookshelves and Enchantment Tables. Paper can naturally occur in Chests inside Strongholds. There is no way to write on paper, but as of 12w17a snapshot, is possible to write inside a book with a book and quill.

Paper was added to Minecraft Seecret Friday 6 (v1.0.11) patch. Its only use at the time was to craft Books.
The item used to make Paper was renamed from Reeds to Sugar Cane in Beta 1.2.
Crafting of a map from Paper was added in Beta 1.6.

- Although in real life most paper is produced from wood pulp, paper can be made from sugar cane bagasse.
