Leaves are a type of block which grow as part of trees. There are four types of leaf blocks, one for each of the four types of trees (oak, birch, spruce, and jungle), which are identical except for their appearance and their drops when destroyed. Leaf blocks are easily destroyed by tools, explosions, and fire, and when destroyed may drop saplings which can be used to plant new trees.
Leaves have no use in crafting.

[edit] Appearance
Leaves take on a different shade of green depending on the biome they are placed in.
Leaves are always transparent to light, but cannot be seen through when the graphics mode is set to “Fast”; the transparent regions are instead black.
Leaves diffuse sunlight, causing the shadows they cast under trees.
[edit] Decay
Leaves from trees spontaneously decay (disappear) randomly when not connected to a wood (log) block by other leaf blocks, with a maximum distance of 4 blocks. Decaying leaves will drop saplings and apples at the same rate as directly destroyed blocks. The supporting wood block need not be of the same tree type.
Player-placed leaf blocks will never decay and can be used in construction such as tree houses and hedges.
[edit] Drops
- When harvesting using shears or a Silk Touch enchanted tool, leaves drop as themselves and can be placed elsewhere.
- Leaves which decay or are destroyed without using shears usually drop nothing, but yield saplings 5% (1/20) of the time. Jungle leaves drop saplings 2.5% (1/40) of the time.
- Oak leaves also have a 0.5% (1/200) chance of dropping an apple.
[edit] History
| Classic | ||
|---|---|---|
| 0.00.14a | Trees were first added to the game. | |
| Beta | ||
| 1.2 | Birch and pine trees introduced. Trees predating this update would appear to have multiple types of leaves, as the data indicating tree type was previously used for decay calculations. | |
| 1.6 | Before, the fact that leaves were marked as transparent when set to Fancy graphics, but marked as opaque when set to Fast, made it possible to place torches and ladders on leaves in "Fast" graphics and switch back to "Fancy" graphics without making them come off. Similarly, in "Fast" graphics, getting stuck inside leaves (usually by using Bone Meal) would suffocate you, while on "Fancy" graphics leaves would not suffocate you. For the full list of things leaves do differently depending on graphics mode, see Opacity. Because of its transparency, leaves were used as windows before glass was implemented. In older versions, hostile mobs could have spawned on leaves on "Fast" graphics. In SMP, leaves had always behaved as if running in "Fast" graphics mode. This meant that torches could be placed on leaves and hostile mobs had a chance to spawn on them, even when running "Fancy" graphics. | |
| 1.7 | Implemented shears to collect leaves. Before, leaves could only be obtained via inventory hacking, or the /give command in multiplayer. |
|
| 1.8 | Leaf blocks placed by the player or an Enderman no longer decay like normal leaves do. | |
| Official release | ||
| 1.1 | 11w48a | Oak leaves have a small chance of dropping a red apple. |
| 1.2.1 | 12w03a | A fourth type of leaves was added, which only naturally occurs in Jungles biomes. |
| 1.3.1 | 12w18a | Jungle leaves have a small chance of dropping cocoa beans. |
| 12w19a | Jungle leaves no longer drop cocoa beans. | |
[edit] Original leaf decay algorithm
In Alpha, leaves would decay using an algorithm that checks whether it has a solid or leaf block underneath it or is adjacent to a solid block. If it doesn't, it must be connected to a leaf block that is also supported as long as it is no further than five blocks away from said support.
- Alpha-style decay
[edit] Bugs
- When sprinting on leaves, the particles that appear are gray, caused by the fact that they use biome tinting.
- On the Xbox 360 Edition leaf blocks will not decay if there is snow on top of them, even if there is no wood block adjacent to them.
- Leaves disappear when pushed by pistons.
[edit] Trivia
- Occasionally, leaves will grow through other blocks, acting as though they are still connected to the tree. They may also completely replace blocks they try to grow into.
- Leaves do not prevent a sapling from growing. As long as the five blocks above a sapling are transparent, the tree will grow (provided it has enough light).
- In the default textures, the leaf to air ratio for the texture is about 3:2 for normal/birch leaves, and about 9:5 for spruce leaves.
- Leaves do not prevent chests from being opened, even when running in "Fast" graphics mode. See Opacity.
- Despite being highly flammable, leaf blocks cannot be used as fuel for a furnace.
- Leaves do not cushion a player's fall at all and the player will take completely normal fall damage. This is also the same on either Fast or Fancy graphics.
- Some trees seem to occasionally drop apples or saplings without being destroyed due to creation of leaf blocks not supported by wood.
- Leaves were the first block in the game that gave you a different item depending on what tool you used to harvest it (Shears or hands)
- Leaves and wood are the only blocks that can be found naturally above layer 128.
