Leather is an item that was added along with the introduction of cows. It can be acquired by killing cows, which will drop 0-2 pieces of leather upon death. As of Snapshot 13w16a, leather is also obtainable by killing horses.

Leather is used to craft the lowest tier of armor, leather armor. 24 pieces are required to craft the full set. Leather armor is the weakest armor, and not too difficult to obtain, but sometimes much harder than finding iron.

Leather is also required for the crafting of books, which in turn are needed to create bookshelves and the Enchantment Table. Leather is also needed to craft Item Frame which is used to display your items or blocks.
