An Eye of Ender (or Ender Eye) is a craftable item used to locate and activate End Portals. Eyes of Ender are also used to locate the larger Stronghold structures that house End Portals.

[edit] Acquisition
An Eye of Ender can be crafted by combining an Ender Pearl and Blaze Powder. Ender Pearls are dropped by Endermen and blaze powder is crafted from Blaze Rods, dropped by Blazes in The Nether.
Eyes of Ender can also be acquired from Priest Villagers, which usually costs between seven and ten emeralds each.
[edit] Usage
Eyes of Ender can be used to locate and activate End Portals, or to craft an Ender Chest.
To locate End Portals (and the Strongholds that house them):
- When held and right-clicked, an Eye of Ender will fly in the direction of the nearest End Portal, traveling through any blocks necessary, and leave a trail of purple particles in its wake.
- While far away from an End Portal, the Eye always travels upwards to offer an easily-visible indication of the horizontal direction the player must travel.
- When the player gets close to the End Portal's horizontal coordinates, the Eye floats in a more precise direction that takes the z-axis into account. This often means the Eye will travel downwards, to indicate the player is above a Portal and must mine downwards.
- After two or three seconds of travel, the Eye floats in the air briefly, then either falls (becoming collectable again), or shatters in mid-air. The Eye has a 1:5 chance of shattering.
Tip: One effective means of finding End Portals is to triangulate their location by throwing eyes from a few locations.
Once an End Portal is found, Eyes of Ender will also be required in order to activate it. End Portals require a total of 12 Eyes of Ender in order to activate, though they will generally already contain 1-5 Eyes naturally. Eyes can be placed in empty End Portal frame blocks by right-clicking on them until the entire ring of 12 is filled, thereby activating the Portal.

[edit] History
| Beta | ||
|---|---|---|
| 1.9pre2 | In older worlds, generated before 1.9 Pre-release 3, the eyes may mislead you to a place where there isn't a Stronghold at all. This is most likely because the eyes lead to where a Stronghold should be based on the seed, and seeds generate worlds differently in older versions. Therefore, if you saved the coordinates the eye traveled to in an old world and generated a new world with the same seed, you could travel to those same coordinates and find a stronghold. | |
| 1.9pre3 | First added Eye of Ender, had no use. Initially, Eyes of Ender were oddly large from third person or other players view in multiplayer. It also appeared to be held at a 90 degree angle from the original orientation. This was due to a programming error, which specifies that Eyes of Ender should be wielded as a "tool" in third person. This error was shared by Sugar. | |
| 1.9pre4 | Each Eye could now be placed in a portal block or used to home in on a Stronghold. Jeb demonstrated the new uses for an Eye in his livestream.[1] An End Portal within a Stronghold could be seen in the stream with two Eyes inserted into blocks. | |
| 1.9pre5 | In 1.9 Pre-release 5, there was a bug when, if the eye is thrown, it would make both the arrow shooting sound and the egg throwing sound. | |
| Official release | ||
| 1.0.0 | Fixed size and sound bug. | |
| 1.3.1 | 12w22a | Eyes of ender can be bought from villagers. |
[edit] Bugs
- Sometimes when trying to locate a stronghold, the eyes will lead you in circles, even though you may be up to 1000 blocks away from the stronghold. This bug can make it difficult to find a stronghold. The best way to fix this is to walk a ways past this circle in the way the eyes first led you. Then throw the eye again.
[edit] Trivia
- If the world is generated with the "Generate structures" option disabled, the Eye of Ender will lead you to the place where the Stronghold would have been generated.
- The Eye of Ender's right-click function only works in the Overworld in normal worlds. It does nothing in the Nether, the End, or in Superflat worlds, as there are no Strongholds there.
- When in 2nd or 3rd person view, the Eyes of Ender go out of The Player's forehead instead of from their hand.
- The Eye of Ender looks nothing like the eyes of anything "Ender." The Ender-mobs, Endermen and the Enderdragon, all have pink eyes. They Eyes do look like the Endermen's pearls, due to their crafting recipe, but it is hard to find any resemblance to Blaze Powder in the Eye.
