Cobblestone is a common block, used for creating various items, that resembles an uneven, roughly paved surface. Cobblestone only occurs naturally in dungeons, NPC Villages, strongholds, or when water and flowing lava come into contact (which allows for infinite cobblestone generators to be made). However, if the lava flows on top of the water from above, stone will be created instead. It is commonly used to create walls for constructions with a medieval appearance such as castles, towers and roads. Cobblestone is obtained by mining stone. Cobblestone takes slightly longer to mine than normal stone, and there is an alternative version of the block known as Moss Stone. Silverfish have the ability to enter and hide in cobblestone (along with clean stone and stone bricks).

[edit] Uses

Room of cobblestone.

Cobblestone is a basic building block, required for the crafting of many essential tools and items.

Cobblestone is required to craft furnaces, Cobblestone Slabs, stone stairs, stone tools and weapons, levers, Pistons, dispensers, cobblestone walls, Brewing Stands and Droppers. Because of its fair blast resistance, immunity to Enderman griefing, and the abundance of stone, cobblestone is a very commonly-used building material. Cobblestone can be smelted back into smooth stone in a furnace.

Stone tools are easy to craft and widely available early in the game. However, they possess the lowest enchantability of all tool sets, surpassed even by wooden tools. Even after iron is available, stone tools and swords are cheap to the point of being "disposable". Thus they are useful for many tasks where more expensive tools would be used up in short order. Some examples include experience farms, hoeing farmland, mining, or wood farms.

[edit] History

original Minecraft logo.
Classic
Pre 0.0.9a (May 13, 2009) Cobblestone was the first block added to Minecraft, followed by grass.
Cobblestone started out with this texture: Cobblestone-Classic.png which looks very similar to the pre-Beta 1.7 one, but with less detail.
Because of its dark color it was often used in pixel art to represent darker colors until other darker blocks, like black wool and obsidian appeared.
Cobblestone was used for the original logo for the game's official website and for the original Minecraft text on the main menu.
0.0.19a Cobblestone was removed due to lack of room in the UI.
0.0.20 Cobblestone was re-added again.
Beta
1.7 The cobblestone texture was changed from Cobblestone-Pre Beta 1.7.png to Cobblestone.png which is lighter and a little smoother.

[edit] Trivia

  • Cobblestone is resistant to Ghast fireballs, making it useful for guarding portals.
  • Until the release of Beta 1.3 cobblestone was used to create stone slabs.
  • The current texture for cobblestone has the top and bottom halves swapped and brightened.
  • The original texture came from one of Notch's abandoned projects called RubyDung.
