Coal is a common mineral that is mostly used for smelting, building torches, and for powering minecarts.

Besides being used to make torches, coal can also be used to power minecarts and to fuel furnaces. After a furnace is made, the food dropped by dead animals can be cooked using coal as fuel for the flame. This is a good idea because eating raw food can poison the Player.
