Chain armor in-game

Chain Armor is a type of Armor that was made by Notch as a test. Pieces of chain armor can be crafted like all other types of armor; however, since Fire is the ingredient, which can only be obtained via modding or use of the /give command in Multiplayer, or in 12w19a for singleplayer commands. Chain armor has the same durability as iron armor, but provides only slightly more protection than gold armor.

Chain armor is the only type of armor that you cannot craft in survival. Chain armor is unique in that it is the only default armor with large amounts of transparency within the armor. Every other pixel is transparent, except for the front of the head, which has a clear space for the face, and other areas which have no covering.

In Beta 1.8 it became available in Creative mode (although armor cannot be equipped in Creative). It remains unknown if it will be craftable in Survival mode in the future.

[edit] Trivia

  • The chain chestplate has slightly longer sleeves than all other chestplates.
  • The chain helm covers all sides of the head completely except the face unlike most helms where the face has a nose guard and covers the sides of the head partially
  • The chain armor can be acquired "legitimately" with Creative mode, but as it is still made of fire, players are still unable to acquire it in Survival.
  • There was a popular rumor that stated chain mail armor absorbs all damage done (so instead of losing .5 armor and .5 hearts you lose 1.0 armor), but this is not true.
  • Since there are no armor slots in creative mode, it is impossible to put on chain armor legitimately, however in SMP, or with cheats, the player may change gamemodes, put the chain armor on, and change back to creative.
